FR 101 French Language and Cultures I (FL/HU)

3 credits. Multiple sections.

  • For students who have never studied French; or with one year of high school French; or with one or more years of elementary or middle school French.
  • Covers essential fundamental French structures and vocabulary and their socio-linguistic applications in both spoken and written communication.
  • Develops knowledge of cultural topics relating to contemporary French and French-speaking countries through classroom discussions, diverse media resources, and various projects.
  • Focus on intercultural competence.
  • Satisfies one of these two Core Curriculum/General Education requirements: FL, HU.

FR 102 French Language and Cultures II (FL/HU)

3 credits. Multiple sections.

  • Prerequisite: Grade of C- or higher in FR 101 at UA; or equivalent from another institution; or two years of high school French.
  • Advances knowledge of fundamental structures of French and their socio-linguistic applications in both spoken and written communication.
  • Further explorations of cultural topics relating to contemporary French and French-speaking countries.
  • Expands intercultural competence.
  • Satisfies one of these two Core Curriculum/General Education requirements: FL, HU.

FR 201 French Language and Cultures III (FL/HU)

3 credits. Multiple sections.

  • Prerequisite: Grade of C- or higher in FR 102 ; or equivalent from another institution; or 3 years of high school French with a B+ average in French or higher; or 4 years of high school French with a B average in French or lower; or a 3 on the AP French exam.
  • Reviews and refines linguistic knowledge within a culturally rich context.
  • Focus on interpretation and critical reflection on the content and aesthetic qualities of various literary and journalistic texts, watch short films, and listen to songs or other multimedia broadcasts.
  • Broadens intercultural competence.
  • Satisfies one of these two Core Curriculum/General Education requirements: FL, HU.

FR 202 French Language and Cultures IV (3 credits, FL/HU)

3 credits. Multiple sections.

  • Prerequisite: Grade of C- or higher in FR 201; or equivalent from another institution; or 4+ years of French with a B+ average in French or higher; or a 4 on the AP French exam.
  • Refines linguistic and intercultural competence through various creative and persuasive writing projects.
  • Expands intercultural competence.
  • Prepares students for advanced courses advanced literature, linguistics, and culture courses by developing their ability to interpret and analyze the aesthetic qualities of literary texts, as well as think critically about the values reflected in cultural products and practices across the Francophone world.
  • Satisfies one of these two Core Curriculum/General Education requirements: FL, HU.

FR 321 Creative Writing in French (W)

  • Introduction to literary and cultural analysis through selected works of French cultural expression: poems, short stories, plays, and films.

FR 323 Persuasive and Analytical Writing in French (W)

FR 324 French for Business Development

  • Prepares to communicate in a French-speaking business environment.
  • Develops multimodal, linguistic, and problem-solving skills in French.
  • Critical study of tourism-related communicative practices, protocols, and local vs. global issues affecting intercultural business relations.

FR 325 Cultures and Conversations (FL) – Section 1

  • Strengthens ability to exchange information and ideas, express, react, and support opinions.
  • Refines oral expression and conversational skills in French as well as cultural knowledge.
  • Exploration and discussion of French TV series.
  • Satisfies one Core Curriculum/General Education requirement: FL.

FR 325 Cultures and Conversations (FL) – Section 2

  • Exploration and discussion of culturally situated perspectives on ideals of the French Republic (freedom, equality, solidarity, and laïcité) using the thematic backdrop of food and fashion.

FR 333 (His)stories and Fashion

  • Focus on prominent French fashion houses that defined the 20th century.
  • Explores the role of designers and their creations in fashioning societal, cultural, and ideological changes in contemporary societies.
  • Develops knowledge of the language of fashion and its codes.
  • Emphasis on narration and description.

FR 341 French Literature: Origins to Revolution (L/W)

  • Introduces to French literature from its origins to the French Revolution.
  • Explores literary and cultural history of this period (11th to 18th century).
  • Develops analytical, critical thinking, and writing skills.

FR 361 Introduction to Romance Linguistics

3 credits. MWF 12:00-12:50

  • Introduction to linguistic science through an evaluation of the Romance language family.
  • Exploration of language typology and classification.
  • Comparison of common morphological, lexical, and phonological patterns in Romance.
  • Analysis of distinct aspects of various Romance languages, especially Italian, French, and Spanish.
  • Cross-listed with IT361 and SP361.
  • Conducted in English.

FR 421 Pronunciation and Phonetics

3 credits. MW 3:30-4:45

  • Prerequisites: FR 321 or FR 323; or instructor permission.
  • Introduction to phonetic theory.
  • Study the International Phonetic Alphabet.
  • Improve prosodic skills such as phrasal intonation, rhythm, liaison, and stress patterns.
  • Analyze the correspondence between written representation and pronunciation.
  • Consider variations in pronunciation regarding social class, regional or national differences, situational usage, and formality.
  • Emphasis on developing oral proficiency.

FR 470 18th-Century French Literature

  • Explores predominant literary genres of the 18th century, their evolution and connection to modern literary genres.
  • Examines philosophical and political movements of the 18th century Enlightenment in France and it’s growing empire.
  • Questions how the age of exploration and creation of colonial empires impacted both hexagonal and transatlantic thought as well as literary and artistic production.
  • Analyses connections between texts and cultural, artistic, social, and/or political contexts.
  • Develops analytical, critical thinking, and writing skills.
