Reading Proficiency Exams

The Graduate Exam of Reading Proficiency in French is offered to graduate students at the end of each semester, typically two weeks before finals week. It is not a “qualifying exam,” but a translation exam. If you are interested in taking a reading proficiency exam, please email Dr. Bruce Edmunds

The Fall 2023 exam will be given on October 18, 2023 from 2:00 to 5:30 pm in B.B. Comer 248. Students outside the Department of Modern Languages and Classics will be charged $35 cash, to be paid on the day of the exam.

Note: Students in graduate programs from other departments are advised to check with their program advisors prior taking a course or either exam as described below.

You can satisfy the reading proficiency requirement in French by either

  • Taking FR 501 and passing the course or
  • Taking the exam directly in French to fulfill the language requirement.
