Language and Identity Against All Odds: Judeo-Spanish in Istanbul and New York City

Dr. Rey Romero (University of Houston-Downtown) will address the role of language in society and the incidence of sociopolitical contexts in language development and use, with a focus on language shift, language and identity, and language maintenance.

Dr. Romero is an Associate Professor of Spanish (Ph.D., Georgetown University) at The University of Houston-Downtown. In addition to his expertise on Judeo- Spanish, which includes his book Spanish in the Bosphorus (2012), he has experience teaching and working with Spanish for the professions, including medical Spanish and legal Spanish.

Organized by the Spanish section of the Department of Modern Languages & Classics Co-sponsored by the Department of Modern Languages & Classics, the Department of Gender & Race Studies, the Department of History, the Department of Religious Studies, and the College of Arts & Sciences.
