Dr. Michael Shaughnessy will be speaking on “Demographics, Data, and Divergent Paths: A meta-analysis of language programs in the USA”. The event will take place from 3:30 to 5 pm in 3104 of the Student Center.
This talk focuses on the results of a large-scale data study by the American Association of Teachers of German (AATG). In 2021, the AATG collected and analyzed data related to thousands of institutions in the US that offered German and other languages. While the study focuses on German, it provides key insights into the educational politics of the United States in regards to language learning. The presentation opens a dialogue on how language programs are signs of institutional quality, yet sometimes struggle with access issues as they are often not afforded to poorer, rural areas and not offered at many minority-serving institutions.
