The German program offers several scholarships to undergraduate and graduate students pursuing degrees in German. Funding varies from year to year.
For Current UA Students
Barbara Fischer Scholarship for Study in Germany or Austria
Awarded annually to German majors to participate in one of our study abroad programs in Germany (scholarship amount up to $1000). Applicants should be on the 300- level of German and must have declared German as their major.
Barbara Fischer Scholarship for German Undergraduate Major with Exceptional Progress in German
Awarded to a student who has made exceptional progress in German. This scholarship will be awarded if additional funds are available. Applicants should be at least on the third year level of German and must have declared German as their major.
Federation of German-American Clubs Exchange Program
Awarded annually for study at a German university of the student’s choice for a full academic year (September/October-July), sponsored by the Verband der Deutsch-Amerikanischen Clubs. Students do not pay tuition at The University of Alabama but can transfer course credit earned in Germany for their UA degree. This generous stipend covers living expenses and fees abroad. Nominated by faculty. Applicants should be on the 300-level of German and must have declared German as their major. Please note that you can express your interest in the exchange, however the German program officially nominates the candidate/s.
Bell-Spicer Scholarship for Participation in Summer Study program Alabama in Germany
Awarded annually to German majors to participate in the summer study abroad program in Austria or Germany. Applicants must have completed their first year of German classes. German majors are given preference.
For High School Students
Donald Hall Excellence in German Scholarship
Awarded annually to the best high school senior in the State of Alabama as judged by the German Day competitions at The University of Alabama ($1,000 to be awarded upon enrollment as a German major at The University of Alabama).
How to Apply
Submit your complete scholarship application(s) to any German instructor by February 15, 2019. A complete application includes the following items:
- German Scholarship Application (follow the link for the application form)
- Résumé (CV) with current GPA
- Current (unofficial) transcript
- You must have declared a German major (or double major) in order to apply.
- Application letter
The application letter should include information explaining your current knowledge of German, your financial situation, and your career goals. Your letter should explain how the scholarship will help you with your study of German and enhance your future career goals. Please include also any information on German related awards, study abroad experiences, and any German related activities if applicable. Recommended length of letter is 1-2 pages.
