JA 101 Elementary Japanese I (4hrs)

Five hours of instruction per week. Acquisition of Elementary Japanese language skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

JA 102 Elementary Japanese II (4hrs)

Prerequisite: JA 101 or equivalent. Five hours of instruction per week. A continuation of JA 101.

JA 201 Intermediate Japanese I (3hrs)

Prerequisite: JA 102 or equivalent. A continuation of JA 101 and JA 102.

JA 202 Intermediate Japanese II (3hrs)

Prerequisite: JA 201 or equivalent. A continuation of JA 201.

JA 301 Third-Year Japanese I (3hrs)

Prerequisite: JA 202 or equivalent. A continuation of JA 201 and JA 202.

JA 302 Third-Year Japanese II (3hrs)

Prerequisite: JA 301 or equivalent. A continuation of JA 301.

JA 353 Japanese Conversation and Composition (credit varies)

Prerequisite 202 or equivalent, and permission of the instructor. Oral drills, pronunciation exercises, simple oral reports, calligraphic exercises, and composition of letters and reports.

JA 356 Traditional Japanese Literature in Translation (3hrs)

Introduction to Japanese literature from the earliest times through the Tokugawa period. No knowledge of Japanese is required.

JA 357 Modern Japanese Literature and Film in Translation (3hrs)

Introduction to modern Japanese literature and film from the Meiji period to the present. No knowledge of Japanese is required.

JA 390 Kanji Class (3hrs)

Students prepare for the JLPT Kanji portion of the national test (taking the national test is optional!).

JA 410 Fourth-Year Reading and Writing Japanese (3hrs)

Prerequisite JA 302 or equivalent. A continuation of JA 301 and JA 302 with emphasis on development of reading and writing skills.

JA 411 Fourth-Year Spoken Japanese (3hrs)

Prerequisite: JA 302 or equivalent. A continuation of JA 301 and JA 302 with emphasis on development of listening and speaking skills.

JA 450 Seminar in Japanese Literature I (3hrs)

Seminar on topics in Japanese Literature read in English translation. This course may be substituted for ASST 450.

JA 451 Seminar in Japanese Literature II (3hrs)

Prerequisite: JA 450 or permission of the instructor. A continuation of JA 450. Topics in Japanese Literature; may involve readings in Japanese and/or English translations, according to student interest and background.

JA 481: 482 (1-4 hrs)

Directed Readings in Japanese. Prerequisite: JA 410 or permission of instructor.
