Charles D. Perry Endowed Scholarship

The Charles D. Perry Endowed Scholarship was established in 1990 from gifts donated by Dr. Charles D. Perry, former professor of Classical Languages at UA, and Dr. J. Warren Perry, former Professor and Dean of Health Related Sciences at SUNY-Buffalo. Priority for the award is given to outstanding incoming students who intend to major in Classics at UA. Most of these students will have taken Latin or a related course of study at the high school level.

Each year we award approximately four Perry scholarships. The amount of the award varies from year to year but can be substantial.

To apply for the Perry Scholarship, please complete the Classics Scholarship Application Form and send the completed form to Dr. Kirk Summers by email (ksummers@ua.edu) by March 15 of the current academic year. Please include a short essay (1-2 paragraphs) outlining how your study of Greek, Latin, and/or Classical Civilization will advance your scholarly and career goals during and after your time at UA.

Selby Hanssen Memorial Scholarship and the Lelia Harris Lang Scholarship

Two other awards, the Selby Hanssen Memorial Scholarship and the Lelia Harris Lang Scholarship, are given to two outstanding students who are already studying Classics at UA. The decision on these awards will be made based on the faculty’s judgment of their students’ work without an application on the part of the students.
