Welcome to The University of Alabama Japanese Language and Literature Program! Japanese language is a popular choice among students today. There are many cultural exchange programs, scholarships to study abroad in Japan, and career opportunities available to UA students taking Japanese. We are dedicated to promoting your success in communicating in Japanese and understanding Japanese culture. With a large population of native Japanese students on campus, you can make a cultural connection in a structured setting with our weekly Conversation Cafe. The students from Japan enjoy using their native language and the students of Japanese learn valuable speaking skills and make new friends at the same time.

Through collaboration with the Capstone International Programs and Services, we are proud to offer Study Abroad experience with five universities throughout Japan. For scholarship opportunities to attend these universities for a semester, check out the Study Abroad page. Many students who take advantage of this wonderful opportunity during their undergraduate years end up with careers relating to Japan, working in the JET program, or continue on with graduate study in Japan.

The students in the Japanese program are very active in extra-curricular clubs and social events related to Japan. Many students taking Japanese also sign up for clubs such as the Japan Club, Anime Club, Taiko (Japanese Drumming) Team, and Conversation Cafe. Join us now in the Japanese department for an experience you’ll never forget!
